DO RECYCLE:
Keep this information handy so that you'll know what your town accepts as recyclable items. If you have any questions about your town's program, please call the Public Works Department at 828-7022. Remember, curbside recycling saves money, helps the environment...and, IT'S THE LAW.
ONE PAIL RECYCLING: In the Town of Berlin, one blue rectangular recycling bin is used to collect all clean food and beverage containers made of glass, metal and plastic #1 or #2 (polycoated milk and juice cartons, plastic bottles and jugs). (Note: Containers larger than 2 gallons will not be recycled.)
WHAT TO DO:
1. Rinse all containers
2. Put newspaper, magazines, phone books and mixed paper in brown paper bags next to the recycling bin
3. Flatten corrugated boxes to about 2'x3', place next to pail or bin
4. Bring to curbside
Place your recycling container at the curb the night before your recycling collection day. Paper/cardboard may be wet with rain or snow. Do not leave at the curb for more than one day. *Please NOTE: The recycle day is every other week according to your street.
Glass & Juice Cartons: Clear or colored glass bottles & jars. Clean food and beverage containers only. Single-serve containers, pint, quart, and half-gallon juice & milk cartons.
No: Light bulbs, Ceramics, Cookware, Window/mirror glass, Crystal.
Metal Cans & Foil: Clean food and beverage containers only. Aluminum foil & foil baking tins.
No: Scrap metal, Appliances, Metal parts, Pots/pans, Silverware, Needles, Aerosol and Paint cans.
Plastics #1 and #2: Look for the number triangle on bottom.
No: Bottle caps or #1 & #2 Bottles that contained Antifreeze, Motor oil, Pesticides or other Toxic fluids.
Corrugated Cardboard: Folded Flat to about 2 feet by 3 feet maximum. Clean.
No: Yellow-tinted cardboard.
Newspapers & Magazines: Include all paper inserts. Place in brown paper bag next to bin. Catalogs & phone books also accepted.
NO: PACKAGING MATERIALS. TAPE, EGG CARTONS, CEREAL, SHOE AND PIZZA BOXES.
NO: STRING or PLASTIC BAGS.
Mixed Paper: Office paper, Stationary and Envelopes including those with plastic windows, Direct Mail pieces - shiny coated paper ok. Place in brown paper bag next to bin.
No: Brown manila envelopes, Overnite envelopes or Tyvek.
No: Giveaway items (Product samples/CD's).
No: Greeting cards or Wrapping paper.
No: Boxboard, 6-pack cartons or non-corrugated Cardboard.
No: Tape, Post-it-notes or Mail with Pressure sensitive labels.

The Town also provides for the collection and recycling of rechargeable batteries. The Town in cooperation with the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation, a non-profit public service organization, will recycle the following rechargeable household batteries:
Nickel Cadmium (NI-Cd)
Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH)
Lithium Ion (Li-ion)
Small Sealed Lead (Pb), less than 2 lbs each
These batteries are typically found in household items such as cordless power tools, cellular and cordless phones, laptop computers and camcorders, and so identified.
Batteries will be accepted at no charge at the following locations:
Berlin Town Hall
Room 8, Public Works
Monday-Wednesday - 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
Thursday - 8;30 a.m.-7:00 p.m.
Friday - 8:30 a.m. -l:00 p.m.
Berlin Municipal Recycling Center
Town Farm Lane
Monday - Friday - 7:15 a.m.-3:15 p.m.
Most Saturdays 9:00 - 1:00 (call for exact dates)
